Studying hard outcomes of physician empathy on patients’ health is a new field, but the preliminary outcomes are intriguing. One study showed that the patients of doctors with higher empathy scores have better control of their cholesterol and blood sugar. Medication compliance appears to be increased for patients with more empathic doctors. Oncology patients may experience better quality of life and less depression with empathic practitioners. Even the basic common cold could possibly be influenced. The colds of patients with more empathic doctors were less severe and ended sooner.
